Yesterday marked a joyful occasion for thirty patients at the Pacific Eye Institute as the Guangdong Bright Journey medical team from China removed their surgery dressings. The team has made significant strides in enhancing the lives of people across the Pacific region, with the Chinese ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian, highlighting their remarkable contributions.
According to Ambassador Zhou, the Bright Journey initiative has successfully completed 100 cataract surgeries in the Pacific, restoring sight to many and enabling them to return to a life of quality and normalcy. He emphasized the important role these surgeries play not only in individual lives but also for families, particularly those where the patient was the primary breadwinner. The inability to work due to vision issues can create hardships, making this medical assistance even more crucial.
Last year, the team carried out 60 cataract surgeries, and this year, they have already completed 30, with plans to perform an additional 30 surgeries in the coming days. The ambassador expressed his happiness at witnessing the transformation in the patients’ lives, noting the incredible joy in their eyes as they regain their sight.
This initiative not only highlights the importance of accessible healthcare but also showcases the power of international collaboration in improving lives. As the Bright Journey medical team continues their work, they are not just restoring vision; they are bringing hope and support to families throughout the Pacific. It serves as a reminder that with each surgery, a new chapter starts for these patients, filled with possibilities and brighter futures.
