Thirty patients at the Pacific Eye Institute experienced a wave of relief and joy yesterday as the Guangdong Bright Journey medical team from China removed their surgical dressings. The Chinese ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian, praised the efforts of the team, noting their significant impact on the lives of the patients.
Mr. Zhou highlighted that the medical team has not only restored vision to these patients but has also improved the quality of life for many in the Pacific region, completing a total of 100 cataract surgeries to date. “They have helped the Fijians reclaim their sight and return to a life of high quality,” he stated.
A crucial aspect of this initiative is the hope it brings to families; some patients, previously unable to support their households due to their eye conditions, are now on the path to recovery. Last year, the Bright Journey team completed 60 cataract surgeries, and they plan to perform another 60 surgeries this year. So far, they have completed 30 surgeries, with 30 more scheduled in the coming days.
Mr. Zhou expressed his joy, saying, “When I remove the cover from their eyes, you can see the light in their eyes.” This positive experience not only rejuvenates the patients but also enhances the hope and stability of entire families.
In summary, the efforts of the Guangdong Bright Journey team are significantly changing lives in the Pacific region, restoring sight and hope to those who need it most. Such initiatives underscore the power of international collaboration in healthcare, illustrating a bright path forward for communities in need.
