Cynthia Latchman was overcome with emotion as she paid tribute to her late father, James Latchman, during a Remembrance Day ceremony held at Sukanaivalu Army Barrack in Labasa. For the first time, the 26-year-old from Savusavu had the opportunity to honor her father’s memory, which she greatly cherished. Having lost him to a brief illness at the tender age of three, Latchman expressed her longing for the connection she never fully experienced.
James Latchman had served in the military for approximately 15 years prior to his passing in 1995. Cynthia, the eldest of four siblings, traveled from Savusavu to participate in the memorial, eager to share the experience with others who have lost loved ones in service.
Another poignant remembrance came from Meredani Sakealevu, a 50-year-old mother from Vunivau, Labasa. She reflected on her late husband, Maciu, who died due to complications from COVID-19 in September 2021. Sakealevu shared her sorrow, highlighting that life hasn’t been the same since his unexpected departure. She expressed pride in his three decades of dedicated service as a soldier.
Major Penasio Maumau, the officer in command of the Republic of the Fiji Military Forces at Sukanaivalu Barracks, addressed the attendees, reaffirming that the sacrifices made by fallen soldiers will never be forgotten and their dedication will always be honored.
This annual event stands as a testament to the enduring memories of those who served and the families left behind. It serves not only as a moment of grief but also as a celebration of bravery, bringing people together in remembrance.
Ultimately, events like these foster a sense of community among those who have faced similar losses, creating a space for shared emotions and collective healing. The timeless honor bestowed on these heroes is a reminder of their lasting impact on both their loved ones and the nation.
