Honoring Prophet Muhammad: A Call for Peace and Inclusion in Fiji

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad has emphasized the importance of reflecting on the teachings of Prophet Muhammad, who preached values such as peace, inclusivity, tolerance, and ethical behavior. Speaking to Fiji’s Muslim community as they celebrate the birthday of the founder of Islam, he noted that social, ethical, moral, and religious principles are vital for the nation’s social, economic, and political advancement.

Professor Prasad acknowledged the significant contributions of various religious groups, particularly the Muslim community, to the country’s education and communal life. He stated that the Muslim community has always been, and will continue to be, a crucial part of the nation’s progress towards achieving lasting peace, harmony, and tolerance, which are essential for inclusivity, equality, dignity, and justice.

He recalled a historical moment in 1974 when the National Federation Party, led by Hon Siddiq Moidin Koya, successfully negotiated with Prime Minister Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara to designate Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday and Diwali as public holidays in recognition of the Indo-Fijian community. This act was seen as a demonstration of bipartisanship for the national good.

As the celebrations continue, Professor Prasad extended warm wishes for a blessed celebration to Fiji’s Muslim community, highlighting the nation’s diverse and multicultural fabric.
