Families from Koro in Levuka, Lomaiviti, gathered with excitement as they awaited the arrival of Goundar Shipping Limited’s MV Captain Inoke. This event held a special significance for the Ratotodro family, as the vessel was named in memory of their late patriarch, Captain Inoke Ratotodro.
Melaia Ratotodro, the oldest daughter, was emotionally moved as the ship docked at Port Mua-i-Walu, reflecting on her father’s legacy. “Our dad, who was one of the longest-serving staff at Goundar Shipping Limited, passed away last October, and in his honor, the company named this vessel after him,” she shared. “We may miss him dearly, but we are immensely grateful for what the company has done. He was a hardworking man and dedicated 30 years of his life to this company.”
George Goundar, the managing director, expressed his sadness at the loss of Mr. Ratotodro, who not only played a pivotal role in the company but was also a close friend. “When I started this company in 2011, he stood by my side, helped lay the groundwork, and provided invaluable advice on navigating the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji regulations,” Mr. Goundar explained. “While I managed the engineering side, he was crucial in overseeing the deck operations and company affairs.”
The MV Captain Inoke is captained by Sainimere Qutonilaba, a talented 31-year-old from Savudrodro, Savusavu, Vanualevu, who has been with Goundar Shipping since 2011. Her journey started as a cadet, and she has steadily advanced by bringing several new vessels to the company.
Before boarding the ship for a tour, a traditional ceremony marked the occasion, bringing added cultural significance to the event.
This touching tribute underscores the strong community and familial bonds inherent in the maritime industry, serving as a reminder of the legacy and dedication of those who have paved the way for future generations.
In summary, the arrival of the MV Captain Inoke marked both a milestone for Goundar Shipping Limited and a heartfelt celebration of Captain Inoke Ratotodro’s enduring legacy. The sense of appreciation from the Ratotodro family and colleagues is a testament to the impact of a dedicated individual and the spirit of camaraderie in the maritime community.
