Lote’s Homestay in Namulomulo, Nabouwalu, has become a popular destination, attracting numerous visitors during the festive season. Owner Alipate Radrodro, who previously worked in the hotel industry, shared that more than 100 guests stayed at the homestay during December, including personnel from various government agencies and NGOs.
The establishment of the homestay came in the wake of Tropical Cyclone Yasa in 2020, with its first patrons being staff members from Save the Children Fiji who were in the area to conduct post-cyclone assessments. Mr. Radrodro noted that they stayed with him for three months initially.
At 38 years old, he utilized his experience as a Business Development Manager at Holiday Inn Suva to launch this venture as a means toward achieving financial independence and entrepreneurial success. The family home was converted into a homestay, which now includes 17 guest accommodations across three houses, priced at $100 per person per night and inclusive of meals.
Mr. Radrodro emphasized the support he received from his family, particularly his wife, stating she has been instrumental in this journey. The homestay has garnered positive feedback for being the only accommodation option in Nabouwalu, conveniently located near the Nabouwalu Jetty, where ferry passengers often stay when faced with delays.
In a move that highlights his entrepreneurial spirit, Mr. Radrodro launched a vehicle rental business in 2023, currently managing 13 vehicles, including a minibus that services the Nabouwalu-Labasa route. He credited the success of his homestay for enabling him to start the rental service.
Looking toward the future, Mr. Radrodro has ambitious plans for expansion. He aims to enhance the homestay experience by adding a swimming pool, bar, and restaurant, with construction costs projected at nearly $1 million. This development is expected to generate jobs for 15 individuals. He has leased beachfront land from local landowners to provide guests with both a homestay and a boutique beachfront hotel option.
With a vision of growth and innovation, Mr. Radrodro remains optimistic about the future of his business and the positive impact it will have on the Nabouwalu community.
This story embodies the spirit of resilience and adaptability, demonstrating how challenges can lead to opportunities. Mr. Radrodro’s journey reflects the entrepreneurial drive necessary to turn a crisis into a thriving business, fostering community development and creating employment.
