Lote’s Homestay in Namulomulo, Nabouwalu, Bua, has emerged as a popular destination, attracting numerous visitors during the festive season. The owner, Alipate Radrodro, a former hotel employee, shared that the homestay welcomed over 100 guests during December last year, including personnel from government agencies and NGOs.
Established after Tropical Cyclone Yasa in 2020, the homestay began its journey by hosting Save the Children Fiji staff who conducted post-cyclone assessments. Radrodro reflected on this experience, stating, “Save the Children Fiji stayed with us for three months.” With his background as a Business Development Manager at Holiday Inn Suva, he identified the homestay as a pathway to financial stability and entrepreneurship.
The family home has since been transformed into a homestay that currently offers 17 guest spaces across three houses. Guests can expect a rate of $100 per person per night, which includes breakfast and dinner. Radrodro acknowledged the support of his family, particularly his wife, who has been his foundation throughout this venture.
Customer feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, particularly due to the homestay being the only accommodation provider in Nabouwalu, conveniently situated near the Nabouwalu Jetty. Guests sometimes utilize the homestay for rest during ferry delays, enhancing its appeal.
In 2023, Radrodro expanded his business by launching a vehicle rental service, which now manages 13 vehicles, including a minibus that operates on the Nabouwalu-Labasa corridor. He noted, “My homestay business helped me start the rental business.”
Looking to the future, Radrodro plans a significant expansion of the homestay to meet growing demand. This expansion will include a swimming pool, bar, and restaurant, with construction costs projected to be nearly $1 million. He aims to create 15 new jobs through this development and has leased beachfront land from local landowners to provide guests with both a homestay and a boutique beachfront hotel experience.
Radrodro remains optimistic about his plans, continuing to pursue growth and innovation in Nabouwalu.
This story illustrates the resilience and entrepreneurship that can emerge in the aftermath of natural disasters, highlighting how challenges can lead to new opportunities. With continued support and the community’s involvement, Lote’s Homestay is set for a bright future.
