Lote’s Homestay in Namulomulo, Nabouwalu, Bua, has emerged as a successful venture, drawing in hundreds of guests during the festive season. Owner Alipate Radrodro, who previously worked in the hotel industry, shared that over 100 visitors stayed at the homestay during the peak month of December last year. Guests consisted of staff from both government and non-government organizations.
The homestay was established after the devastating Tropical Cyclone Yasa in 2020, initially hosting staff from Save the Children Fiji who were conducting post-cyclone assessments. Radrodro emphasized the importance of family support in his entrepreneurial journey, particularly from his wife.
Transforming his family home into a homestay, he now offers 17 guest spaces across three houses in the village. Rooms are priced at $100 per person per night, which includes breakfast and dinner. The homestay has received commendations for being the only accommodation option in Nabouwalu, conveniently situated near the Nabouwalu Jetty, attracting ferry passengers during delays.
In response to demand, Radrodro recently expanded his operations by launching a vehicle rental service that includes a fleet of 13 vehicles, catering to the Nabouwalu-Labasa corridor. He credits the success of his homestay for enabling this new venture.
Looking ahead, Radrodro has ambitious plans for expansion that he believes will further enhance the guest experience. His vision includes a major investment of nearly $1 million to add features such as a swimming pool, bar, and restaurant, which will also create 15 new jobs. He has secured beachfront land to develop additional rooms, aiming to offer guests either a homestay or a boutique beachfront hotel experience.
Radrodro’s optimism and innovative spirit are driving his plans, transforming Nabouwalu into a destination that reflects both growth and opportunity.
This story highlights the power of resilience and entrepreneurship after a natural disaster, illustrating how one person’s journey can inspire growth and bring economic benefits to their community. As Mr. Radrodro pursues his vision, it serves as a hopeful reminder of the positive impact local businesses can have in their communities.
