Lote’s Homestay in Namulomulo, Nabouwalu, Bua, has emerged as a successful venture, attracting a steady stream of guests during the festive season. Alipate Radrodro, the homestay’s owner and a former hotel employee, reported that over 100 visitors enjoyed their stay at the homestay last December, which included professionals from various government agencies and NGOs.
The business was initiated as a response to the devastation caused by Tropical Cyclone Yasa in 2020, with Save the Children Fiji being the first to stay for three months while conducting post-cyclone assessments. Drawing on his experience as a Business Development Manager at Holiday Inn Suva, Radrodro turned his family home into a homestay, now offering 17 guest accommodations across three houses. Each room is priced at $100 per night, which includes meals.
Customer reviews have been positive, establishing the homestay as the only accommodation option in Nabouwalu and conveniently situated near the Nabouwalu Jetty, making it a good stop for ferry passengers needing a rest during travel delays. Leveraging his success, Radrodro expanded into vehicle rentals in 2023, now overseeing a fleet of 13 vehicles.
To accommodate the growing interest in his services, Radrodro is planning a significant expansion of the homestay. The proposed project, estimated at nearly $1 million, will introduce new amenities such as a swimming pool, bar, and a restaurant while creating about 15 jobs. He has secured beachfront land from local landowners to offer guests an upgraded option—a boutique beachfront hotel experience.
Radrodro’s vision reflects a determined spirit and highlights the potential for growth and innovation in Nabouwalu.
This article showcases the resilience of communities in rebuilding and thriving despite challenges, serving as an inspiring example for entrepreneurs. The expansion plans also reflect a positive outlook for the local economy, promising new job opportunities and enhanced tourism in the area.
