Lote’s Homestay in Namulomulo, Nabouwalu, Bua, has emerged as a successful venture, attracting numerous visitors during the festive season. Owner Alipate Radrodro, drawing from his experience as a former hotel employee, shared that over 100 guests stayed at the homestay during December of last year, comprising staff from various government bodies and NGOs.
The establishment was born out of necessity after Tropical Cyclone Yasa struck in 2020, with its initial guests being Save the Children Fiji staff who were involved in post-cyclone assessments. Radrodro noted, “Save the Children Fiji stayed with us for three months,” highlighting how the business began as a supportive measure in desperate times.
At 38, Radrodro leveraged his previous role as a Business Development Manager at Holiday Inn Suva to create a path towards financial independence through entrepreneurship. The family residence has since been converted into a homestay featuring 17 guest accommodations across three houses, with rates set at $100 per person per night, which includes meals.
The homestay has garnered positive reviews as the only lodging option in Nabouwalu, its strategic location near the Nabouwalu Jetty attracting ferry passengers who often seek rest during delays.
In 2023, Radrodro expanded his business portfolio by launching a vehicle rental service, now operating 13 vehicles, including a minibus that caters to the Nabouwalu-Labasa route. “My homestay business helped me start the rental business,” he remarked, illustrating the interconnectedness of his ventures.
Looking ahead, Radrodro envisions a significant expansion of his homestay, which will include a swimming pool, bar, and restaurant. The construction, valued at nearly $1 million, is anticipated to generate 15 new jobs and involve the addition of more rooms on beachfront land leased from local landowners, blending the homestay ambiance with a boutique hotel experience.
With a hopeful outlook, Radrodro continues to pursue growth and innovation, determined to advance the potential of Nabouwalu as a tourist destination.
This inspiring story showcases resilience in the face of challenges, reminding us of the possibilities that can emerge from adversity. Radrodro’s journey reflects the entrepreneurial spirit that drives local economies and contributes to community development.
