Homegrown Revolution: Fiji’s Quest for Self-Sufficiency in Food

Concerns regarding reliance on imported food are intensifying, leading local entrepreneurs to call for a shift towards homegrown solutions. This issue was notably addressed by Shayal Singh, co-founder of Million Green Fiji, who recently presented her business during the Pacific Agri-Innovate competition.

“Our mission is to empower people to cultivate their own fruits and vegetables, thereby reducing the need for imports,” Singh stated in her pitch. Million Green Fiji, established in 2019, champions the idea that Fijians can and should grow their own food. Offering over 150 varieties of fruit plants, including cashews and almonds, Singh believes that her company is fostering a significant lifestyle change rather than merely selling plants.

She emphasized the benefits of self-sufficiency, stating, “By planting your own seedlings, you can cut costs and enjoy fresher produce.” The company is also dedicated to educating consumers on sustainable gardening practices. Their services extend to landscaping and enhancing residential spaces to promote productive, green environments.

Singh highlighted successful projects for notable clients, including the Intercontinental Hotel in Natadola, while also exploring the potential of herbs. Currently in the experimental stage of creating herbal teas, Million Green Fiji aims to deliver sustainable tea options and flavored products. Singh mentioned that their herbal offerings also encompass natural remedies like mosquito repellents, emphasizing wellness through the promotion of indigenous plants.

Despite the efforts, Singh acknowledged that challenges such as poor local soil quality and a public preference for convenience pose significant barriers. “We are addressing these issues step-by-step and have a responsibility to utilize our land effectively,” she said.

Now nearing five years in operation, Singh sees Million Green Fiji as a path toward a more self-sufficient future. As a successful woman running an agri-business, she encourages others to recognize the potential in their own backyards, asserting that they can regain control over their food sources and build a sustainable future domestically.

This initiative is a hopeful endeavor toward creating food security and promoting sustainable agriculture in the region. By empowering individuals to grow their own food, Million Green Fiji is not only addressing pressing economic concerns but also fostering a greater awareness and appreciation for local agriculture.
