Homegrown Revolution: Fiji’s Push for Self-Sufficiency

Concerns over the increasing reliance on imported food in Fiji have prompted local entrepreneurs to advocate for the importance of cultivating homegrown solutions. Shayal Singh, co-founder of Million Green Fiji, emphasized this shift during her pitch at the Pacific Agri-Innovate competition last week.

“Our mission is to empower people to cultivate their own fruits and vegetables, reducing the need for imports,” Singh stated, underlining the company’s commitment to encouraging Fijians to focus on local food production. Founded in 2019, Million Green Fiji aims to promote a lifestyle change by offering a diverse selection of over 150 fruit plants, including cashews and almonds, which are typically crucial to the export market.

Singh highlighted the economic and health benefits of growing one’s own food. “We want to show people that by planting your own seedlings, you can cut costs and enjoy fresher produce,” she explained. The company is also dedicated to educating consumers on sustainable gardening practices and offers services to transform residential spaces into productive gardens.

In addition to their focus on plants and seedlings, Million Green Fiji is exploring herbal products, including natural remedies and herbal teas. Singh noted the importance of sourcing herbs both locally and through partnerships, aspiring to promote wellness through the cultivation of indigenous plants.

While the company has made strides, Singh acknowledged the challenges posed by the local soil quality and the public’s tendency to prefer convenient, store-bought produce. “We’re tackling those issues step-by-step,” she said.

With nearly five years of operation, Million Green Fiji is on a mission to foster a more self-sufficient future for Fiji. Singh encouraged everyone to recognize the potential in their own backyards and take control of their food sources as a means of reducing dependency on imports.

This entrepreneurial initiative not only aims to cultivate plants but also to nurture a deeper connection to local food systems, paving the way for a sustainable lifestyle and a brighter future for the Fijian community.
