During the recent holiday period from December 22 to 25, the Fiji Police Force reported the issuance of 934 traffic infringement notices. Among these, 23 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. Additionally, 440 individuals received notices for minor violations, while 311 were penalized for speeding.
Other offenses included 58 instances of careless driving, 51 violations for failing to produce a driver’s license, and another 51 for not wearing seat belts. Furthermore, 10 drivers were cited for carrying excess passengers, 8 for using mobile phones while driving, and 5 for operating a vehicle with an expired license.
Assistant Commissioner for Police Operations, Livai Driu, emphasized that speeding remains the leading cause of traffic accidents. He urged all drivers to adhere to speed limits and highlighted ongoing efforts to raise traffic safety awareness. Driu also advised drivers to ensure that their documentation is in order and easily accessible, as well as to plan their trips carefully to stay safe on the roads. He recommended getting adequate rest and limiting alcohol intake if planning to drive.
This focus on road safety is a crucial reminder of the importance of responsible driving, especially during busy holiday periods. By raising awareness and promoting safe driving behaviors, it is hoped that the number of traffic accidents can be reduced, contributing to a safer environment for all road users.
