HIV Surge: Urgent Action Needed as Cases Rise in Fiji

Strengthening health systems to ensure timely treatment and care for individuals living with HIV is essential, as addressing stigma and discrimination remains a significant obstacle to accessing services. This point was made by Renata Ram, UNAIDS Fiji HIV adviser, in response to the recent statistics released by the Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MOHMS), which reported 552 new HIV cases in the first half of 2024.

Ram noted that the rise in reported cases may be linked to various factors, including a notable increase in HIV testing and screening efforts nationwide, especially among key populations, as indicated by the data from MOHMS.

“We must also prioritize sexual health education, particularly for young people and vulnerable groups, to ensure they have the knowledge and skills to protect themselves,” Ms. Ram emphasized. She expressed encouragement over the number of individuals coming forward for testing due to heightened awareness and taking charge of their health.

“This increase in testing is crucial for identifying undiagnosed cases, ensuring individuals can access the necessary care and treatment,” she added. However, ongoing challenges, such as limited access to consistent prevention services—including condom distribution, harm reduction for drug users, and sexual health education—may also contribute to the rising case numbers.

Ram highlighted that social and economic factors, including the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, have likely intensified vulnerabilities within marginalized communities.

To tackle the increase in HIV cases, she stated that a comprehensive approach is needed, mentioning that the MOHMS will soon launch the HIV Surge Strategy.

Ms. Ram reaffirmed UNAIDS Fiji’s commitment to supporting the Ministry of Health and other partners in enhancing comprehensive HIV prevention strategies. This includes boosting access to condoms, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), and harm reduction services.
