HIV Prevention Urged as Children Receive Care After Unusual Transmission Methods

Children undergoing rehabilitation at Lautoka Hospital have contracted HIV/AIDS through sharing blood via a method known as “bluetoothing.” Lynda Tabuya, the Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, confirmed that families of the affected children have sought assistance.

Ms. Tabuya disclosed that some children in the hospital engaged in this dangerous practice, which resulted in their HIV/AIDS diagnosis. The hospital is providing them with rehabilitation services while ensuring their identities remain confidential.

She expressed her sadness over the circumstances that led to these children acquiring the disease, emphasizing the need for community involvement in safeguarding the welfare of children.

“Support from families and community members is crucial. We need a comprehensive prevention plan and strategies in place, and I urge our communities and traditional leaders to take responsibility for the well-being of our youth and children,” Ms. Tabuya stated.

Additionally, she highlighted the importance of faith-based leaders in disseminating awareness and education within their congregations, reinforcing that mobilizing youth in churches can create a positive impact.
