HIV has resulted in 13 fatalities between January and June this year, according to a statement from the Health Ministry, which also reported 552 new cases of the virus in the same timeframe.

This marks an increase compared to previous years, with 82 deaths reported last year and 49 in 2022.

The ministry is urging the public, especially young people, to avoid high-risk behaviors that elevate the chance of acquiring HIV. Such activities include using injectable drugs and sharing needles, engaging in unprotected sex with multiple partners, and participating in chemsex activities.

It is emphasized that HIV is not a death sentence; with proper treatment, individuals living with the virus can enjoy normal lives. The ministry also highlighted the importance of getting tested to know one’s HIV status, particularly for those involved in high-risk behaviors. They strongly encourage anyone who tests positive for HIV to seek timely treatment and adhere to their prescribed regimen.
