HIV Cases Surge in Fiji: What’s Behind the Increase?

The Health Ministry has reported 552 new cases of HIV in Fiji from January to June 2024, reflecting a 33 percent increase compared to the total for the previous year.

These new cases were identified across all divisions of Fiji, with the Central division accounting for the highest number at 380 cases, followed by the Western division with 151 cases, the Northern division with 19, and the Eastern division with 2 cases.

The ministry noted that 73 percent of the new cases involved individuals younger than 39 years. Among these, 137 cases (24.8 percent) were in the 20 to 24 age group, 128 cases (23 percent) were in the 25 to 29 age group, and 50 cases (9 percent) were in the 15 to 19 age group.

While sexual transmission remains the main method of HIV spread in Fiji, 15 percent, or 85 of the 552 new cases, were among individuals who identified as injectable drug users. This marks a significant rise in new cases within this demographic compared to previous years.

Despite the increase in new cases raising concerns, the ministry anticipates that the number will continue to grow as it enhances nationwide screening, testing, and enrollment in care programs.
