HIV/AIDS in Children: A Call for Community Action

Children who have contracted HIV/AIDS through unsafe practices, including blood sharing, are currently undergoing rehabilitation at Lautoka Hospital. Lynda Tabuya, the Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, confirmed that families of these affected children have sought assistance.

Minister Tabuya mentioned that there are a couple of children in the hospital who engaged in risky behaviors, which led to their HIV/AIDS diagnosis. She emphasized the importance of maintaining confidentiality regarding the children’s identities, as is required by law. Concerned families have expressed their worries about the situation.

Tabuya expressed sadness that the children had to reach such a critical point and urged the community to take an active role in safeguarding the well-being of their children. She stressed the necessity for community involvement in developing prevention strategies and plans.

She called upon families, community members, and traditional leaders to take responsibility for the health of the youth. Minister Tabuya also highlighted the influence of faith leaders in spreading awareness about this issue, encouraging them to advocate for the health of children and youth within their congregations.
