Austin III during his historic visit — marking the first time a high-ranking official from the U.S. Department of Defense has visited Fiji. Secretary Austin emphasized the importance of the U.S.-Fiji relationship, noting the shared values that underpin their cooperation. He announced the initiation of negotiations on a Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA), aimed at advancing U.S. engagement with Fiji and other Pacific Island nations.

Additionally, a commitment of $4.9 million in new U.S. security assistance was pledged to support Fiji’s military modernization, pending congressional approval. This funding is intended to enhance Foreign Military Financing for Fiji’s defense capabilities.

Austin’s visit is part of a larger tour that includes Australia, the Philippines, and Laos, reflecting the U.S. strategy to strengthen partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region to ensure a free and open area.
