A remarkable milestone was achieved in Lautoka, Fiji, when Kusum Lata, a 56-year-old mother of three, became the first Fijian to successfully undergo heart surgery at Fiji’s only locally owned private hospital, Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH). The operation, which came as a relief to Mrs. Lata, came at a fraction of the cost typically associated with such procedures abroad, particularly in India.
Before her successful surgery, Mrs. Lata faced daunting medical expenses, estimated at around $23,000 USD, alongside the additional burden of travel costs for treatment in India. Following a heart attack in June, she was understandably anxious and concerned about her future. However, after learning about PSH’s new capability to perform heart surgeries locally, she took the initiative to seek help and was thrilled to be the first patient to undergo such a procedure at the facility.
Reflecting on her experience, Mrs. Lata expressed her gratitude towards the surgical team, led by Pacific Specialist Healthcare founder and CEO Parvish Kumar. She noted how comforting it was to have her family by her side during her recovery—something that wouldn’t have been possible had she traveled to India for surgery.
Mrs. Lata’s successful surgery has turned into an inspiring message for other Fijians. She encourages citizens to explore local options for heart procedures, emphasizing that significant savings can be made without compromising the quality of care. She stated, “I paid less than a quarter of what I would have paid if I went to India,” highlighting the affordability of local healthcare.
In summary, Kusum Lata’s journey not only marks a significant achievement for her but also symbolizes the advancements in Fijian healthcare, offering hope and a viable alternative to many in need of heart surgeries.
This story serves as a beacon of hope, showcasing the importance of accessible and affordable healthcare and the positive changes within the healthcare system in Fiji. With the right support and resources, patients like Mrs. Lata can receive essential medical treatments without the financial stress often associated with seeking care overseas.
