A remarkable achievement occurred in Lautoka as Kusum Lata, a 56-year-old mother of three, became the first Fijian to successfully undergo heart surgery at Fiji’s only locally owned private hospital, Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH). Expressing deep gratitude to the medical team led by founder and CEO Dr. Parvish Kumar, Mrs. Lata’s life took a turn for the better with this groundbreaking procedure.
After suffering a heart attack in June, Mrs. Lata was faced with the daunting prospect of undergoing surgery in India, with estimated costs totaling around $23,000, including travel and accommodation. In a fortunate turn of events, she learned about PSH’s capabilities and decided to pursue her surgery locally.
“I was so happy. Never dreamt this could be done here,” Mrs. Lata shared, expressing relief to have her family by her side during her recovery, which would not have been possible had she traveled abroad for her procedure. The cost of her operation at PSH was less than a quarter of what she would have paid in India, making this option not only a lifesaving measure but also a financially viable one.
Her message to fellow Fijians is filled with hope: there is no need to bear the high expenses associated with heart surgeries abroad when high-quality care is now available locally. Following her operation, she reported significant improvements in her health.
This development marks a significant milestone for healthcare in Fiji, showcasing the potential for accessible and affordable medical services within the country. As more individuals become aware of these options, there is hope that many lives can be saved and improved, reinforcing the importance of supporting local healthcare initiatives.
