A mother of three from Lautoka, Kusum Lata, has made history by becoming the first Fijian to successfully undergo heart surgery at a locally owned private hospital, the Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH). The 56-year-old from Natabua expressed her gratitude towards the hospital’s founder and CEO, Dr. Parvish Kumar, along with his dedicated team of doctors and nursing staff.
Kusum’s operation was significantly more affordable than the typical costs associated with similar procedures in India, which often reach around $23,000 USD when factoring in air travel and other expenses. After suffering a heart attack in June, she faced a daunting situation when informed about the high costs for surgery abroad. However, upon learning that PSH would be starting heart surgeries, she took the opportunity to receive treatment locally.
The positive outcome of the surgery brought immense relief to Mrs. Lata and her family, who were able to support her during her recovery, a luxury not possible had she gone to India for the procedure. She encourages others in Fiji to explore local options, stating, “Save your money, don’t worry about high expenses for heart operations as PSH does it for much less.”
Since her surgery, Mrs. Lata has experienced a significant improvement in her health, reporting that she feels much better following the operation.
This story not only highlights a breakthrough in healthcare within Fiji but also offers hope for other patients facing similar challenges. With the establishment of PSH, patients can now access necessary medical care at affordable rates, potentially saving them from the stress and financial burden of seeking treatment overseas.
In summary, Kusum Lata’s journey underscores the importance of accessible healthcare options within the country, showcasing a community where people can receive quality medical treatment without the excessive financial strains often associated with overseas medical care.
