A landmark payment of $105.08 per tonne, the highest amount ever recorded in Fiji’s sugar sector, will be provided to cane farmers this Diwali.

Charan Jeath Singh, the Minister for Sugar Industry, stated that this significant support extends beyond financial assistance; it represents a deep commitment to the dedication and resilience demonstrated by every farmer.

He noted that acknowledging the difficulties faced by farmers, the Government, led by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuk, has increased the initial payment by $2.57, resulting in a total rise of $4 per tonne.

“This Diwali, we are fulfilling our promise to empower farmers, ease their burdens, and honor the contributions they make daily to Fiji,” Singh said.

He further emphasized that this historic payment reflects the Coalition Government’s commitment to fostering a sustainable future for the sugar industry and enhancing the livelihoods of farmers while recognizing their hard work.
