In a significant milestone for U.S.-Fiji relations, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka met with U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III during his historic visit to Fiji. This marks the first time a high-ranking official from the U.S. Department of Defense has visited the island nation.
During the bilateral talks held in Nadi, Prime Minister Rabuka expressed his appreciation for the U.S.’s ongoing support in critical developmental areas and highlighted the importance of advancing defense cooperation between Fiji and the United States.
Reaffirming Fiji’s dedication to enhancing ties with the U.S., Prime Minister Rabuka noted the importance of collaboration under the incoming Trump Administration. He also acknowledged the signing of the Acquisition and Cross-Servicing Agreement (ACSA), which is designed to strengthen logistical cooperation between the two nations.
Secretary Austin emphasized the significance of his visit, stating, “I’m very proud to be the first U.S. Secretary of Defense ever to visit Fiji. It’s an honor to be here. Our relationship is rooted in common values and our shared vision for a free and open region.” He stressed the importance of partnerships with Fiji and other Pacific island countries to maintain a free Indo-Pacific region.
As part of their strengthened partnership, several initiatives were announced, including the initiation of negotiations for a Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) to enhance U.S. cooperation and support for military modernization with an investment of $4.9 million, pending congressional approval.
These developments build upon previous collaborations such as the Fiji-U.S. Air Transport Agreement signed in August and the establishment of a USAID Pacific Regional Office in Fiji earlier this month. Secretary Austin’s tour also includes visits to Australia, the Philippines, and Laos, underscoring the U.S.’s commitment to bolstering regional security through strong alliances and cooperative partnerships.
This diplomatic engagement is a hopeful indicator of positive developments in the Indo-Pacific region, promoting stability and collaboration among nations.
Overall, the strengthening of U.S.-Fiji ties reflects a commitment to regional security and cooperation, positioning both countries for greater joint efforts in addressing future challenges.
