For the first time ever, an all-female boxing team from Victoria, Australia, is competing in the Fiji Amateur Boxing for Junior, Youth and Women competitions at the Vashist Muni Memorial Primary School Hall in Navua. The team consists of eight boxers, including juniors, youths, and elite fighters, who are set to face local female boxers from the Navua region.

Cam Todd, Fiji’s National Boxing coach, expressed his enthusiasm for this landmark event. He stated, “It’s possibly the first time in Fiji’s history that we have an all-women’s team coming from Victoria.” He highlighted the presence of eight boxers, with a mix of ages and experience levels, all competing against local girls.

This event also serves as a fundraising opportunity for the local boxing club hosting the competition. Todd noted, “We wanted to help raise some money for their club,” adding that many of the Fiji girls boxing are from that area and will benefit from strong home support.

The tournament features a total of 25 bouts, including eight of them being international matches. “There’s a total of 25 fights, but there’ll be eight internationals, and they’ll box again with different opponents from Fiji tomorrow,” Todd elaborated.

Todd’s main goal is to promote and develop women’s boxing in Fiji. He mentioned that he aims to get more women of all ages involved in amateur boxing, stating, “Part of my program is to develop women.” He collaborated with friends in Australia who were eager to bring their state team for development.

Impressed by the talent in Fiji, Todd remarked, “Every tournament I attend, I ensure I’m there, making notes and observing all the young boxers from nine years old and up. Fiji has remarkable talent in amateur boxing.” He noted that both boys and girls as young as nine or ten are excelling in the sport, comparing their skills favorably to those in New Zealand.

The competition will continue today at 1 PM. Todd encouraged everyone to attend and support their local boxers, promising an exciting day of boxing.
