In 1978, a significant milestone was achieved in Fiji with the inauguration of the Rabi Island airstrip, marking a joyful event for the local community, particularly the children who witnessed the first aircraft landing at the site. On November 10, the opening ceremony drew attention as it featured Anne Livingston, the chief photographer for The Fiji Times, in attendance among the flight’s passengers.
Situated off Buca Bay, Rabi Island was previously isolated from regular air travel. The new airstrip, built at Panbiang village at a cost of $150,000, aims to serve the island’s population of around 3,000 residents. The entire community contributed to funding the construction, with hopes to recuperate some costs through government assistance.
Fiji Air has introduced a new Islander service, operating three times a week between Rabi and the mainland, with one-way fare priced at $36. This development not only enhances connectivity for the residents, making travel to and from the island much more accessible, but also opens new avenues for economic and social growth.
This moment is a testament to community effort and resilience, showcasing how collaboration can lead to significant advancements that benefit isolated populations. The opening of the Rabi airstrip symbolizes progress and optimism for the future, illustrating the potential for improved access to services and opportunities for growth in this vibrant community.
