Fiji Revenue Customs recently held a ceremony to present one TruNarc and two FirstDefender drug detection devices at the Suva Wharf. This initiative, supported by the UNDP Pacific and funded by the Japanese government, aims to enhance Fiji’s efforts in safeguarding its borders from illegal drug activities and the potential exportation of harmful substances.
The new equipment will enable border officials to quickly classify and identify illegal substances, eliminating the lengthy wait for official laboratory test results. Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration, Pio Tikoduadua, emphasized the significance of these tools for maintaining border security. He noted that the devices allow officers to scan for narcotics without opening packages, thereby preserving the integrity of evidence and reducing health risks associated with physical contact.
The Japanese government expressed its concern over the increasing number of drug-related incidents in Fiji, referencing a significant drug raid in Spain earlier this month as a crucial reminder of the global surge in criminal activity.
According to UNDP Pacific representatives, this initiative aims to motivate families to remain vigilant in addressing drug-related problems that threaten community well-being. They underscored the immediate dangers posed by drug trafficking and its broader implications on the livelihoods of the Fijian population.
Fiji Revenue Customs expressed optimism that the introduction of this advanced equipment will significantly bolster efforts to combat drug-related crime, leading to an enhanced sense of safety and security for the citizens of Fiji.
This initiative represents a positive step toward enhancing national security and public health. By equipping border officials with advanced technology and fostering community awareness, Fiji is taking proactive measures to combat the looming drug crisis, fostering a safer environment for all citizens.
In summary, the collaboration between local authorities and international partners is paving the way for a united front against drug trafficking, showing a commitment to protect the nation’s well-being.
