Leaders from the Pacific Islands Forum Troika will embark on a high-level observational mission to New Caledonia this Sunday. This initiative responds to a request from the New Caledonian government and adheres to the agreed Terms of Reference established by the French State and endorsed by Forum leaders.

The mission will be led by Forum Chair and Tonga’s Prime Minister Hu’akavameiliku Siaosi Sovaleni, who will be accompanied by Cook Islands Prime Minister Mark Brown and Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, along with Solomon Islands Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade Peter-Shanel Agovaka.

Prime Minister Hu’akavameiliku expressed the strong public interest surrounding the mission, emphasizing the Forum’s ongoing concern for the people of New Caledonia following unrest earlier this year. He noted the importance of this mission and its timing, especially after discussions among leaders last month, stating, “This mission highlights the value of the region in coming together to help each other in times of need.”

The leaders will be accompanied by Secretary General Baron Waqa and senior officials, receiving guidance from both the French State and the New Caledonian government. Their itinerary includes a tour of Noumea, where they will engage with stakeholders affected by the unrest that began in May. This will involve discussions with local political parties, youth, affected communities, and representatives from the private, health, and education sectors.

According to the Forum, this mission is crucial as New Caledonia navigates its intricate political landscape and the ongoing social and economic challenges. By gaining insights into local perspectives, the Forum aims to facilitate ongoing dialogues about the territory’s future while honoring its current status.
