A team from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) is currently conducting a thorough investigation into a theft involving $5,800 stolen from Malti Devi, the 66-year-old mother of Member of Parliament Alvick Maharaj. The incident occurred on December 19, 2024, while Malti was at CWM Hospital collecting her medication. Initially unaware of her missing purse, she only realized it was gone the following morning as she prepared for a physiotherapy session.

In response to the discovery, Mr. Maharaj quickly contacted Bank South Pacific to block the card linked to her purse. Unfortunately, he was informed that the card had already been used for unauthorized withdrawals and purchases, including a significant transaction of approximately $1,800 at Thirsty Liquor in Lami.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation and concerned about the rapid use of her card, Mr. Maharaj lodged a formal complaint at the Raiwaqa Police Station, requesting immediate action from law enforcement. However, he expressed his frustration over the perceived lack of urgency from the police, noting that it had been more than two weeks without significant progress.

Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew confirmed that the investigation is ongoing. He stated that investigators have secured Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) footage from the liquor outlet and are awaiting approval from the relevant bank to access footage from the ATM as part of their efforts to identify the perpetrator.

This case highlights the critical importance of prompt action in response to theft and the need for improved collaboration between law enforcement and the community to enhance public safety. With the collection of CCTV evidence and the active involvement of Mr. Maharaj and his family, there remains hope that authorities will identify the culprit and recover the stolen funds.
