High-Profile Court Showdown: Former Attorney-General Faces Serious Charges

Former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum is set to appear in the Nadi Magistrates Court today, facing multiple charges, including abuse of office, breach of trust, and the unlawful carriage of firearms on aircraft.

Sayed-Khaiyum is specifically charged with 11 counts related to the unlawful transport of firearms on aircraft, alongside 11 counts of receiving corrupt benefits, 11 counts of breach of trust as a public servant, and 11 counts of abuse of office.

This afternoon, Acting Director of Public Prosecutions Nancy Tikoisuva approved the charges against Sayed-Khaiyum and others, including Shaenaz Voss, former Executive General of Corporate Affairs at Fiji Airways, and Sharun Ali, the General Manager of Safety, Security, and Quality at Fiji Airways. Voss faces three counts of giving a corrupt benefit, while Ali is charged with 11 counts of the same.

Furthermore, Voss, Ali, and Fiji Airlines T/A Fiji Link are charged with five counts of failing to report security occurrences and three counts of violating airline security protocols.

The charges fall under the Civil Aviation (Security) Act 1994, Civil Aviation (Security) Regulations 1994, and the Crimes Act 2009. The accused individuals will be presented in the Nadi Magistrates’ Court later today.
