High-Profile Corruption Charges Rock Fiji Airways Leadership

Former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum is set to appear in the Nadi Magistrates Court today, facing several charges including abuse of office, breach of trust, and the unlawful carriage of firearms on aircraft.

Sayed-Khaiyum is facing a total of 11 charges related to the unlawful transportation of firearms on an aircraft, alongside 11 counts of receiving corrupt benefits, 11 counts of breach of trust as a public service employee, and 11 counts of abuse of office.

This afternoon, Nancy Tikoisuva, the Acting Director of Public Prosecutions, approved the charges against Sayed-Khaiyum as well as against Shaenaz Voss, the former Executive General of Corporate Affairs at Fiji Airways, and Sharun Ali, the General Manager of Safety, Security, and Quality at Fiji Airways, along with Fiji Airlines, trading as Fiji Link.

Shaenaz Voss faces three counts of providing corrupt benefits, while Sharun Ali is charged with 11 counts for the same offense.

Moreover, Voss, Ali, and Fiji Airlines face five counts related to the breach of mandatory reporting of security incidents and three counts pertaining to breaches of airline security protocols.

All charges have been brought under the Civil Aviation (Security) Act 1994, Civil Aviation (Security) Regulations 1994, and the Crimes Act 2009. The accused individuals are expected to be presented in the Nadi Magistrates’ Court this afternoon.
