High Court Set to Rule on Alleged Corruption in Government Affairs

The High Court will issue a preliminary ruling on Monday regarding allegations against former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and former Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem. The case revolves around an alleged constitutional breach involving Saneem’s rights.

Both individuals appeared today before Resident Magistrate Yogesh Prasad, where Sayed-Khaiyum faces a charge of abuse of office, and Saneem is charged with receiving a corrupt benefit. The charges stem from actions taken between June 30 and July 12, 2022, during which Sayed-Khaiyum, while acting as Prime Minister, allegedly signed a Deed of Variation and Addendum with Saneem without proper authorization from the Constitutional Offices Commission and the President.

In defending both men, attorney Davanesh Sharma raised additional concerns about whether a Constitutional Office Holder can also serve the Public Service. He has requested time to review the consolidated charges, which have been officially filed and served.

It is also alleged that Saneem, between June 1 and July 31, 2022, unlawfully solicited and received more than $50,000 in tax relief on his back pay from a senior government official without lawful authority or justification.

A tentative trial date has been scheduled for May 26 to 30, with the next hearing set for April 15 to address plea submissions.

This case highlights significant legal challenges within the government sector and emphasizes the importance of lawful conduct by public officials, reflecting ongoing discussions in the community about ethical governance. While the proceedings continue, there remains hope for a resolution that upholds both justice and the integrity of public office.
