High Court Set to Revisit Controversial Case of Ex-Fiji MP

The High Court is set to hear a request to dismiss the case against former FijiFirst MP Vijendra Prakash next Thursday. The case was brought before Justice Pita Bulamainaivalu this morning. Although the hearing was originally scheduled for today, Siddharth Nandan, the counsel in charge, did not appear, and instead, Suva lawyer Jagath Karunaratne represented him. Karunaratne requested the Court to postpone the hearing to Thursday. The Office of the Attorney-General was represented by Yovin Naidu, while Seini Fotofei appeared for the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). The High Court agreed to the postponement and instructed all parties to submit their documents by September 4. Prakash was previously found guilty of unlawfully receiving $33,670 in parliamentary allowances after an eight-week trial last year. He faces charges from FICAC for providing false information to a public servant and for obtaining a financial advantage. The case has now been adjourned to Thursday at 2:30 pm for a hearing.
