Tevita Kapawale, who faces serious charges including five counts of murder, has been denied bail by the Suva High Court. This decision was made by Justice Dane Tuiqereqere during a hearing where Kapawale also faced charges of attempted murder and intimidation.
Kapawale is accused of murdering three Indonesian nationals and two Fijians aboard the FV Tiro 2 in Fiji waters on May 18, 2021, which reportedly stemmed from a conflict among crew members. This was Kapawale’s second request for bail, as he argued that being released would allow him to work and provide for his family.
However, Justice Tuiqereqere noted Kapawale’s previous absences from court, having missed two scheduled appearances. Although Kapawale reported to authorities after a bench warrant was issued, the judge indicated that this did not negate the previous non-attendance.
The case is set for trial in January. The judge expressed concerns about the likelihood of Kapawale failing to return for trial if granted bail. While acknowledging the presumption of innocence, Justice Tuiqereqere pointed out the gravity of the allegations and the substantial evidence against Kapawale, stating that if convicted of murder, he could face a life sentence.
