The High Court in Lautoka has granted the release of three men by reducing their sentences related to a 2015 aggravated robbery case. Semi Ralulu, Savenaca Cava, and Ratu Inoke Nauarabota were previously sentenced to nine and a half years in January 2018. They appealed their sentences three years later, arguing that the duration was excessive.
In his ruling on October 17, Justice Riyaz Hamza noted that the original Magistrate did not adequately justify the ten-year starting point for their sentences. He concluded that the Magistrate had made an error by selecting a tariff of eight to 16 years for sentencing.
Justice Hamza has now set a revised sentence of five years and eleven months for Ralulu, and five years and eight months for both Cava and Nauarabota. He ordered that all three men be released immediately.
