Veronica Malani’s attorney, Sitiveni Raikanikoda, has 14 days to submit an affidavit in response to a strike-out application filed by the seventh respondent, former DPP lawyer Neelraj Sharma.
This civil case was brought before Justice Usaia Ratuvili at the High Court in Suva, concerning a compensation claim amounting to $800,244 million, involving 11 individuals connected to the investigation of an alleged bombing case from 1987 in 2020.
The defendants in the case include several former and current members of the Fiji Police Force as well as the Director of Public Prosecutions. During the proceedings, Ronald Singh, representing Mr. Sharma, informed the court that they have sought to strike Mr. Sharma from the case, citing his former position as a DPP lawyer and his current role at Munroe Leys Lawyers.
Justice Ratuvili instructed Mr. Raikanikoda to respond to the application and indicate whether he possesses evidence regarding his client’s involvement. Mr. Raikanikoda raised concerns about the absence of legal representation for two defendants who are retired civil servants: former Acting Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu and retired Assistant Police Commissioner Biu Matavou.
Justice Ratuvili stated that the Office of the Attorney-General would need to provide an explanation regarding this matter in the next hearing. The case has been adjourned until October 9 for further discussions.
