The Lautoka High Court has reached a verdict after six years in a sensitive case involving the rape of a minor relative. Justice Aruna Aluthge announced the guilty verdict last week for a crime committed on a beach in 2018.

The accused faced one count of rape and another of assault with the intent to commit rape. Initially pleading not guilty, the court ultimately determined that the evidence presented by the State prosecution was sufficient to establish guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. The victim, who is now 19 years old, was underage at the time of the incident, which occurred when she visited her uncle’s home on September 10, 2018.

The court is expected to announce the sentencing for the convicted individual at a future date.

This case highlights the importance of ensuring justice for victims of sexual crimes, particularly minors, and emphasizes the legal system’s commitment to addressing such issues, regardless of the time it may take. It is hoped that this verdict will bring some measure of closure to the victim and encourage other survivors to speak out against abuse.
