Mere Rasue, a 34-year-old artist from Fiji, embodies the belief that one’s talent is a divine gift, while how one utilizes it is a gift back to God. Her journey is a testament to overcoming obstacles and discovering her artistic identity.
Originally from Ra and raised in Lautoka, Mere’s upbringing was influenced by her parents, both of whom worked in the public sector. Despite the challenges of early marriage and motherhood, which led her to forego tertiary education, Mere’s aspirations endured. It was her older brother’s encouragement that sparked her interest in the arts, guiding her to pursue a visual arts program at the University of the South Pacific after seeing an advertisement.
Selected from 30 applicants for this program, Mere was introduced to various artistic mediums beyond her earlier experiences with pencil and ink. This transformative opportunity opened new doors for her, leading her to workshops and exhibitions that further fueled her passion.
A pivotal moment in her artistic journey came when she met Anare Somumu during an art exhibition. An established artist known for children’s books, Somumu provided Mere with valuable exposure and connections within the art community. With newfound momentum, she became involved with the Fiji Arts Council and showcased her work alongside recognized artists.
Drawing inspiration from her cultural heritage and natural surroundings, Mere’s art aims to educate younger generations about their roots and preserve cultural traditions. She emphasizes the importance of education, expressing regret for her own educational path, and is dedicated to ensuring her daughters achieve academic success while nurturing their artistic interests.
Looking ahead, Mere aspires to enhance her artistic skills further and dreams of becoming a children’s book illustrator, echoing her commitment to fostering creativity in the next generation.
This inspiring story showcases that with determination, passion, and support, it is possible to rediscover and nurture one’s talents, ultimately leading to fulfilling ambitions.
