The Hibiscus Festival is currently taking place, providing festival attendees the opportunity to watch the touch rugby competition that kicked off yesterday at Albert Park in Suva. Tevita Mau, president of the Touch Federation Fiji, announced that the two-day event will feature participation from at least eight secondary schools.
Mau expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Education for facilitating the involvement of schools in the competition, as the federation seeks to collaborate with the ministry to consider implementing the sport in the academic curriculum for term one next year. He emphasized that schools have always been a key focus for the federation, and this event marks a significant step toward developing touch rugby at the school level.
He also acknowledged the support of the schools, their staff, and volunteers, who played a crucial role in making this event possible. Mau expressed appreciation for their dedication, noting that their efforts are vital to advancing the sport’s reach and success.
Additionally, he thanked the festival organizers for incorporating the touch rugby competition into the festival’s range of activities during the weeklong celebration. Mau encouraged the public to attend and support the schools, showcasing their talents and potentially discovering future players who could represent Fiji in the 2028 Touch World Cup and the 2031 Pacific Games.
Today’s competition at Albert Park will resume at 10 am. Among the results so far, John Wesley College triumphed over Queen Victoria School with a score of 4-1, Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College defeated Lami High School 6-1, and MGM also beat QVS 4-1, while Suva Grammar School ended in a draw with QVS.
