The independent investigation into harassment allegations made during the crowning night of the Hibiscus Festival has concluded. The investigation’s findings are now being reviewed by the Ministry of Local Government. Minister Maciu Nalumisa confirmed this but did not provide additional details regarding the findings.
Nalumisa stated that the investigation adhered to council policies, ensuring that all relevant parties, including committee members and witnesses, were interviewed. The inquiry was conducted by an independent panel that included the Chair of the Suva City Council, a legal expert, an external event management and public safety specialist, and a representative from a human rights or gender-based violence advocacy organization.
“We are committed to ensuring the investigation was impartial, transparent, and conducted professionally, in full compliance with all legal and regulatory standards,” Nalumisa expressed. He also noted that a separate police investigation is ongoing, and the Ministry will fully cooperate with law enforcement throughout the process.
Background information indicates that allegations of sexual harassment emerged when a contestant reported feeling uncomfortable due to claims of ‘groping’ that allegedly took place during the post-crowning cocktail event at the festival’s VIP tent.
