An independent investigation into harassment allegations that arose during the crowning night of the Hibiscus festival has been completed. The findings have been submitted to the Ministry of Local Government for further review.
Minister for Local Government Maciu Nalumisa confirmed the completion of the investigation but refrained from providing additional details about the findings. He assured that the inquiry included interviews with all relevant parties, including committee members and witnesses, conducted in accordance with council policies.
The investigation was carried out by an independent panel consisting of the Chair of Suva City Council, an independent legal expert, an external event management and public safety specialist, and a representative from an organization focused on human rights or gender-based violence advocacy.
“We are committed to ensuring the investigation was impartial, transparent, and conducted professionally, in full compliance with all legal and regulatory standards,” stated Mr. Nalumisa. He also mentioned that a separate police investigation is ongoing, and the Ministry will fully cooperate with law enforcement in this matter.
Background information revealed that allegations of sexual harassment emerged after a contestant reported feeling uncomfortable during the event, with specific claims of ‘groping’ made during the post-crowning cocktail event at the festival’s VIP tent.
