The independent investigation regarding harassment claims made during the Hibiscus festival’s crowning night has concluded. The results are now under review by the Ministry of Local Government. Minister Maciu Nalumisa confirmed this but refrained from disclosing specifics about the findings.
Minister Nalumisa stated that all involved parties, including committee members and witnesses, were interviewed as per council policies during the investigation. An independent panel led the investigation, which included the Chair of the Suva City Council, a legal expert, an external event management and public safety specialist, and a representative from a human rights or gender-based violence advocacy organization.
“We are committed to ensuring that the investigation was impartial, transparent, and carried out professionally, fully adhering to all legal and regulatory standards,” said Mr. Nalumisa. Additionally, he noted that a separate police investigation is currently in progress, with the Ministry pledging full cooperation with law enforcement as the matter unfolds.
Background information indicates allegations of sexual harassment emerged after a contestant expressed discomfort, citing instances of ‘groping’ during the post-crowning cocktail event at the festival’s VIP tent.
