The independent investigation into harassment claims made during the crowning night of the Hibiscus festival has concluded. The findings are currently under review by the Ministry of Local Government. Minister Maciu Nalumisa confirmed the completion of the investigation but provided no additional details regarding the results.
Nalumisa stated that the investigation adhered to council policies, ensuring that all involved parties, including committee members and witnesses, were interviewed. An independent panel led the inquiry, which included the Chair of the Suva City Council, a legal expert, an external event management and public safety specialist, and a representative from a human rights or gender-based violence advocacy group.
Mr. Nalumisa emphasized the commitment to conducting the investigation in an impartial, transparent, and professional manner, complying fully with legal and regulatory standards. He also noted that a separate police investigation is ongoing, and the Ministry will fully cooperate with law enforcement throughout the process.
Allegations of sexual harassment emerged when a contestant reported feeling uncomfortable, including claims of inappropriate touching that allegedly occurred during the post-crowning cocktail event at the festival’s VIP tent.
