The independent investigation into harassment allegations that emerged during the crowning night of the Hibiscus Festival has been concluded. The results of the investigation are now under review by the Ministry of Local Government, as confirmed by Minister Maciu Nalumisa. He refrained from sharing additional details regarding the findings.
Minister Nalumisa stated that the investigation involved interviews with all relevant parties, including committee members and witnesses, conducted in accordance with council policies. The investigation was carried out by an independent panel, which included the Chair of Suva City Council, a legal expert, an external event management and public safety specialist, and a representative from a human rights or gender-based violence advocacy group.
Mr. Nalumisa emphasized the commitment to ensure that the investigation was impartial, transparent, and professionally conducted while adhering to all legal and regulatory standards. He also noted that a separate police investigation is currently underway, and the Ministry will fully cooperate with law enforcement throughout the process.
The background of the case reveals that allegations of sexual harassment arose after a contestant reported feeling uncomfortable, stating there were claims of ‘groping’ that occurred during the post-crowning cocktail event at the festival’s VIP tent.
