Hibiscus Festival Harassment Investigation Results Awaited

An independent investigation into harassment claims made during the crowning night of the Hibiscus Festival has concluded. The findings of the investigation have been submitted to the Ministry of Local Government for further evaluation.

Minister for Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, confirmed the completion of the inquiry but did not provide additional details about the results. He emphasized that the investigation complied with council policies by interviewing all relevant parties, including committee members and witnesses.

The investigation was carried out by an independent panel that included the Chair of Suva City Council, a legal expert, an external event management and public safety specialist, and a representative from a human rights or gender-based violence advocacy group.

Mr. Nalumisa stated, “We are committed to ensuring the investigation was impartial, transparent, and conducted professionally, in full compliance with all legal and regulatory standards.” He also noted that a separate police investigation is currently underway, and the Ministry will fully cooperate with law enforcement throughout the process.

Background: The harassment allegations emerged after a contestant reported feeling uncomfortable and described incidents of alleged groping that occurred during the post-crowning cocktail event at the festival’s VIP tent.
