An independent investigation into harassment allegations at the Hibiscus festival’s crowning night has been completed. The findings are currently with the Ministry of Local Government for review.
Minister for Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, confirmed the completion of the investigation but did not provide further details about the findings. He stated that the investigation included interviews with all relevant parties, including committee members and witnesses, in accordance with council policies.
The inquiry was carried out by an independent panel made up of the Chair of the Suva City Council, a legal expert, an external specialist in event management and public safety, and a representative from a human rights or gender-based violence advocacy organization.
“We are committed to ensuring the investigation was impartial, transparent, and conducted professionally, in full compliance with all legal and regulatory standards,” Mr. Nalumisa stated. He also mentioned that a separate police investigation is underway, with full cooperation from the Ministry as the process continues.
Background information reveals that allegations of sexual harassment emerged after a contestant reported feeling uncomfortable due to incidents of groping during the post-crowning cocktail event at the festival’s VIP tent.
