Hibiscus Festival Harassment Investigation Findings Spark Public Curiosity

An independent investigation into harassment claims made during the crowning night of the Hibiscus festival has concluded. The results are now under review by the Ministry of Local Government.

Minister for Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, confirmed this development but withheld further details about the findings. He stated that the investigation was thorough, ensuring that all relevant parties, including committee members and witnesses, were interviewed according to council policies.

The investigation was carried out by an independent panel that included the Chair of the Suva City Council, a legal expert, an external event management and public safety specialist, as well as a representative from a human rights or gender-based violence advocacy group.

“We are dedicated to ensuring that the investigation was impartial, transparent, and professionally conducted in accordance with all legal and regulatory requirements,” said Mr. Nalumisa. He also mentioned that a separate police investigation is currently ongoing, and the Ministry will fully cooperate with law enforcement throughout this process.

Background information reveals that allegations of sexual harassment emerged after a contestant reported feeling uncomfortable, with claims of ‘groping’ occurring during the post-crowning cocktail event at the festival’s VIP tent.
