The independent investigation into harassment allegations during the crowning night of the Hibiscus Festival has been completed. The results of this investigation have been submitted to the Ministry of Local Government for review.
Minister for Local Government Maciu Nalumisa confirmed the completion of the investigation but did not provide further details about the findings. He stated that the investigation was thorough, with all relevant individuals, including committee members and witnesses, being interviewed in accordance with council policies.
The inquiry was carried out by an independent panel that consisted of the Chair of the Suva City Council, an independent legal expert, a specialist in external event management and public safety, and a representative from an organization focused on human rights or gender-based violence advocacy.
Mr. Nalumisa emphasized the commitment to conducting the investigation in an impartial, transparent, and professional manner, fully compliant with all legal and regulatory standards. He also mentioned a separate police investigation that is currently underway, affirming that the Ministry will fully cooperate with law enforcement throughout the process.
Background information notes that allegations of sexual harassment arose after a contestant reported feeling uncomfortable, with claims of groping during the post-crowning cocktail at the festival’s VIP tent.
