Hibiscus Festival Harassment Inquiry Findings Under Wraps

The independent inquiry into harassment claims from the Hibiscus festival’s crowning night has concluded. The results are now under review by the Ministry of Local Government. Minister Maciu Nalumisa confirmed the completion of the investigation but did not provide additional details regarding the findings.

He stated that the investigation involved interviews with all relevant parties, including committee members and witnesses, adhering to council policies. An independent panel conducted the investigation, which included the Chair of Suva City Council, a legal expert, an external event management and public safety specialist, and a representative from a human rights or gender-based violence advocacy organization.

Mr. Nalumisa emphasized the investigation’s commitment to impartiality, transparency, and professionalism, ensuring compliance with all legal and regulatory standards. He also mentioned that a separate police investigation is ongoing, and the Ministry will fully cooperate with law enforcement throughout the process.

Background information reveals that the allegations of sexual harassment emerged when a contestant reported feeling uncomfortable due to claims of “groping” during the festival’s post-crowning cocktail event in the VIP tent.
