Hibiscus Carnival 1990: A Colorful Celebration of Youth and Community

The 1990 Hibiscus festivities kicked off with the vibrant “March of Youth,” a colorful parade that traversed the main streets of Suva, the capital city. On August 20, 1990, The Fiji Times reported the lively atmosphere as thousands gathered to partake in the Air New Zealand Hibiscus Carnival.

The parade was led by the Fiji Police Band, accompanied by bands from the Salvation Army and the Fiji Military Forces. Marching teams from schools outside of Suva, including RKS, QVS, and St John’s College from Ovalau, contributed to the excitement, while a group of clowns added a whimsical element to the event. The festival’s official opening featured Robert Fullarton, Air New Zealand’s general manager for Fiji, who participated in the parade to express the airline’s support for the celebration. At Albert Park, Lord Mayor Paul Sloan delivered a speech emphasizing the vital role of youth in shaping the future.

“The Hibiscus Carnival is a time to have fun and enjoy a week of relaxation. Today’s youths must recognize and embrace their importance in society, as they will be the leaders of tomorrow,” said Mr. Sloan. He announced Holy Trinity as the best overall team, awarding them $200 in prize money, with Ratu Kadavulevu School and St Anne’s School taking second and first runners-up honors, respectively.

The day’s activities continued with an energetic lunchtime concert at Sukuna Park and the first round of contestant judging at the Phoenix Theatre in the evening. The celebrations concluded with an inter-denominational service at Cruickshank Park and a Casino night at the Suva Travelodge.
